What are the National Indicators?

The National Indicators were set up to measure local authorities’ performance and report to central government. A set of 198 indicators, reflecting national priorities, have been set. Local authorities do not have to report on all 198 indicators; indicators have been selected at a local level and targets have been agreed with central government. There are three waste related indicators:

  • NI 191 - Residual household waste per household
  • NI 192 - Percentage of household waste sent for reuse, recycling or composting
  • NI 193 - Percentage of Municipal Solid Waste sent to landfill

Performance and targets

NI 191 Targets and Performance for all London Boroughs 2004 - 2011

NI 192 Targets and Performance for all London Boroughs 2003 - 2011

Agreed National Indicators

The London boroughs that have agreed targets for NI 191 and 192 are shown in the tables below. None of the London boroughs chose to report on NI 193.

The NI’s have replaced the Best Value Performance Indicators (BVPI) and the statutory recycling targets.
