Western Riverside Waste Authority is responsible for the safe disposal of waste from four of London’s Boroughs; Hammersmith and Fulham, Lambeth, Wandsworth and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.
Cory Environmental
WRWA has a 30 year Waste Management Service Agreement with Cory Environmental (commenced October 2002). Cory Environmental are responsible for the disposal of wastes on the Authority’s behalf.

Reuse and Recycling Centres
|

WRWA owns and operates (through Cory Environmental) two Reuse and Recycling Centres at Smugglers Way and Cringle Dock.
In addition to these, the Authority is responsible for the disposal of waste from the Reuse and Recycling Centre in the London Borough of Lambeth.
The Western Riverside Transfer Station at Smugglers Way, Wandsworth was opened in 1985 and handles on average 5430 tonnes of solid domestic and CA waste per week. The Cringle Dock Transfer Station, situated next to Battersea Power Station, handles on average 3161 tonnes of refuse per week. Both sites represent the most up-to-date technology in waste containerisation and operate efficiently and to the highest environmental standards. Additionally, WRWA utilises Cremorne Wharf as an additional transfer station for co-mingled materials from the four constituent councils, which on average handles 860 tonnes per week.

Please Note: Residents of any borough within the WRWA area, using a car, may bring recyclables and household waste to the CA sites. If a resident wishes to bring rubbish in a van they should pre-notify using www.wrwa.gov.uk or by contacting their borough. Trade Waste customers should contact Cory Environmental Ltd on 020 8871 3924 to ascertain details on trade opening times and current trade waste charges.

What Happens to the Waste?

Waste
Waste is delivered to Smugglers Way and Cringle Dock by the constituent Boroughs. An integral element of the Waste Management Contract with Cory Environmental is river borne transport. Cory’s fleet of barges carry the waste in containers along the Thames, running between the transfer stations (Smugglers Way and Cringle Dock) and Mucking Landfill site in Essex. Here the waste is used as fill for quarried areas of the countryside, once filled these areas are returned to local communities to use for leisure facilities. WRWA is able to dispatch up to 8 barges per day from its two transfer stations, potentially moving in excess of 2,000 tonnes of waste per day.
Recycling
The recyclables that are collected are sold to various outlets:
- Batteries are sent to Vinton Metals, Crayford.
- Cans are sent EMR, who separate aluminium from steel before reprocessing
- Green waste is sent for composting at Cleanaway’s composting facility in Rainham
- Glass cullet that is clear is sent to Industrial Berrymans in Dagenham. Green and brown glass is combined and treated as mixed colour glass
- Mixed colour glass or glass that has been contaminated with ceramics is sent to Day Aggregates.
- Mixed paper and cardboard are sent to Grosvenor Waste Management based in Kent
- Oil is sent to Associated Reclaimed Oils
- Textiles are sent to Scope
- Scrap metal is sent to Sims Metals
- Wood is sent to Grosvenor Waste Management

Recycle Western Riverside
Western Riverside Waste Authority is leading a public waste awareness campaign in conjunction with the London Boroughs of Hammersmith and Fulham, Lambeth, Wandsworth and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. The programme, which complements the national Recycle Now campaign is running for five years from 2002 and aims to raise awareness about waste reduction, recycling and composting in the area. WRWA will continue to work closely with the four Boroughs to help co-ordinate their recycling activities, particularly through the Recycle Western Riverside campaign.
An educational video for use during school visits to the education centre at Smugglers Way has been produced. The video aims to educate visitors about waste minimisation, recycling and buying recycled. It will also show where the materials delivered to Smugglers Way go. The learning outcomes of the video will be consolidated by developing pages specific to the initiatives and practices of the four boroughs on the www.capitalwastelearning.com website; plus developing a worksheet for completion during visits. The video has been produced by the Recycle Western Riverside campaign, London Remade and Waste Watch with funding from the Western Riverside Environmental Fund (WREF).
