Dry recycling

Haringey operate two different green box collection services, which use different collection methods and collect different materials.

5,000 household are served by a weekly kerbside sort collection; materials are collected in a green box and sorted into Stillage vehicles at the kerbside. Residents on this scheme can recycle:

• aluminium foil
• glass bottles and jars
• mixed cans
• mobile phones
• paper
• shoes and textiles

68,000 households are served by a weekly co-mingled collection; recyclables are collected in a split back vehicle. Residents on this scheme can recycle:

• aluminium foil
• cardboard
• glass bottles and jars
• mixed cans
• mobile phones
• paper
• plastic bottles (including milk, drinks, fruit squash, shampoo, washing up liquid and fabric conditioner bottles)
• Yellow Pages

Organics

A collection of food and green garden waste is provided to the 68,000 households on the co-mingled recycling scheme. Green garden waste is collected in a white reusable sack. Food waste (including meat- no bones) is stored indoors in a 5 litre kitchen caddy and outside in a 35 litre bin. Organic waste is collected weekly at the same time as dry recycling using a split back vehicle.

A separate green garden waste collection is provided to 2,500 households on the kerbside sort recycling scheme. Green garden waste is collected in residents own sacks (left untied) on a fortnightly basis using a RCV.

Dry recycling

1,500 estate households are served by 35 bring sites for the separate collection of glass bottles and jars, mixed cans and paper. 4,600 estate household are served by 150 bring sites for the co-mingled collection of cardboard, glass bottles and jars, mixed cans, paper, plastic bottles and Yellow Pages.

Green boxes are provided for smaller blocks of flats wherever possible, so that residents can participate in the kerbside collection service (see the Kerbside Collection section for details).

A door to door collection scheme serves 1000 estate households. Residents have been issued with a reusable bag for the co-mingled collection of:

• cardboard
• glass bottles and jars
• mixed cans
• paper
• plastic bottles
• Yellow Pages

The collection is weekly and material is collected using an RCV.

Bring Sites

There are 80 recycling sites located across the borough where residents can take.

• aluminium foil
• drinks cartons (at 3 sites)
• glass bottles and jars
• mixed cans and paper
• paper
• shoes (at some sites)
• textiles (at some sites)

These include a number of newly introduced bring sites, which have been specially designed using recycled materials.

Home Composting

The Council has been offering residents the chance to purchase subsidised home composters since the beginning of January 2006. Composters cost £17 (220L compost converter), £20 (330 litre compost converter), £40 (KOMP 250L) and £4 (kitchen caddy).  For more information call the Recycle Now call centre: 0845 077 0760.

Nappy Waste

The North London Waste Authority offers a £54 subsidy for the purchase or laundering of real nappies.

Real Nappies for London is a new London-wide scheme to provide parents with an opportunity to try real nappies.  Haringey council has joined Real Nappies for London and if you have a child under the age of 18 months, you could be entitled to claim an information pack and voucher.  For more information please visit: http://www.realnappiesforlondon.org.uk/index.php

Junk Mail

Haringey supports the Mailing Preference Service (MPS), a service that householders can register with to reduce the amount of junk mail they receive. For more information or to register with the Mailing Preference Service please call 0845 070 0707 or visit www.mpsonline.org.uk.

Bulky Waste

Haringey Accord collects furniture, white goods and other bulky items. White goods are collected for free and sent to ReStore Community Projects for reconditioning and reuse. Other bulky items are collected for a charge of £16.84 for up to six items. Items must be left within the boundary of the property for collection – they will not be collected from the pavement.

Litter

The Council currently provides 24 commuter recycling bins at underground and mainline train stations in the borough for commuters’ newspapers and magazines. The units are made of 100% recycled plastic and were designed to minimise security risks and anti-social activities.

Residual Waste

Residual household waste is collected weekly.  Residents are provided with wheeled bins for refuse.
