 Kerbside Recycling

Dry Recycling

Since June 1999, the London Borough of Ealing has supplied 95,000 properties with a weekly kerbside recycling collection service. Residents are provided with a green box for the collection of:

  • aerosols
  • aluminium foil
  • batteries (household and car)
  • cardboard
  • glass bottles and jars
  • mixed cans
  • motor oil
  • paper
  • plastic (all plastics except large items ie. garden furniture, toys and electrical items)
  • plastic bags
  • textiles and shoes
  • yellow pages

Residents are asked to place plastics separately from other recyclables as a different vehicle will be used to collect them.

Organics

Ealing council operates an all year round collection of both green garden waste and food waste to 95,000 households across the borough.

Garden waste is collected in pink reusable waste sacks (due to completely replace the existing biodegradable pink sack scheme by spring 2008) and is collected on a weekly basis on the same day as recycling collections.

Ealing also provides a kitchen waste collection.  Residents are provided with a sealable 21 litre kitchen caddy which can be used for all biodegradable kitchen waste including:

  • cooked and raw food
  • dairy products
  • egg shells
  • meat and fish (including bones)
  • tea bags and coffee grounds
  • vegetable and fruit peelings

Newspaper is also acceptable in the food waste collection as residents are encouraged to use it to wrap food waste in or to line their caddy.  A split bodied compactor vehicle is used to collect garden waste (mixed plastics are collected in the other side) and food waste is collected in a specially adapted stillage vehicle.

 Flat Recycling

Ealings estates recycling scheme provides bring recycling services for 17,000 households on estates excluded from the green box collection scheme. There are now 245 frame sets at 143 estates across the borough with separate wheelie bins for glass bottles and jars, paper and cans.

From November 19 2007, residents in a further 1,000 flats above shops and properties on red routes will take part in a six-month trial offering a mixed collection of dry recycling from home collection as the green box collection does not suite these properties.
