Dry Recycling

Brent has a weekly green box kerbside recycling collection operated by Veolia Environmental Services, which serves 78,000 households. Residents put all their materials into one box, which is sorted at kerbside into different compartments on the collection vehicle. The materials collected are as follows:

• aerosols (not spray paint)
• aluminium foil
• car and household batteries
• engine oil
• glass bottles and jars
• mixed cans
• motor oil
• paper
• plastic bottles
• shoes
• textiles
• yellow pages

Organics

Brent collects organic waste for composting from 60,000 households on a weekly basis. Residents have been provided with a 5 litre kitchen caddy and a 240 litre green wheeled bin which is collected by the council’s contractor Veolia Environmental Service using a normal Refuse Collection Vehicle. The scheme accepts food waste (including meat), green garden waste and cardboard. The waste is composted by West London Composting Ltd.

Residents who have not been provided with a kitchen caddy and green wheeled bin can request for green garden waste to be collected. This service uses biodegradable bags.

Brent provides near door recycling facilities to residents living in flats or multi-occupancy buildings. 10,500 households in flats are served by 260 sites.  Five green wheeled bins are fixed into a metal frame, which is sited in an easily accessible location. The bins can be used to recycle the following materials:

• aluminium foil 
• glass bottles and jars
• mixed cans
• paper 
• plastic bottles

There are over 100 bring sites throughout the borough collecting the following materials:

Not all materials are collected at all sites.

Home Composting

Subsidised composters are available for £5 including delivery.  330 Litre and 220 Litre bins are available and over 12,000 have been distributed to date.

Nappy Waste

The Council supports the use of Real Nappies as an alternative to disposables. For information and advice on using real nappies please contact the council on 020 8937 5095.

Junk Mail Reduction

Brent Council promotes using the Mailing Preference Service to residents to reduce the amount of junk mail they receive.

Bulky Waste

Residents can have 1 fridge or freezer collected free of charge, or they can be taken to the Reuse and Recycling Centre. They are sent to Germany where the CFCs are extracted and then dismantled for scrap metal. Residents can arrange a bulky waste collection by calling 020 8937 5050. Furniture may also be taken to the RRC where it will be re used where possible.  Or alternatively residents can book a bulky waste collection costing £25 for up to 5 items and £5 for each additional item.

Public place recycling

Recycling bins for the collection of newspaper and magazines are located at stations.  Leaf fall is also sent for composting.

Schools Recycling

Brent council officers trained by Waste Watch provide a 'Schools Waste Awareness and Recycling' programme.  An Education Pack is also available for schools, which is packed with classroom activities, worksheets, games and home work challenges. 25 schools have successfully been composting their organic waste since a trial began in 2006. This scheme expanded to a further 25 schools in September 2007.

Residual Waste

Residual household waste is collected from the kerbside on a weekly basis using either 140 litre or 240 litre wheeled bins.
