 Kerbside Recycling

Dry Recycling

Enfield currently runs a weekly kerbside collection to 104,000 households of:

  • aerosols
  • cans
  • cardboard
  • glass bottles and jars
  • paper
  • plastic bottles
  • yellow pages

Residents are issued with a 50 litre black box for the collection of materials, which should be left at the boundary of their property by 7am on their collection day. The materials are collected co-mingled (mixed together) on the same day as the organic material using a split back vehicle (70% of the space on the vehicle is used for recycling and 30% for organics).

Organic

Enfield Council provides 104,000 households with a weekly collection serive for green garden and uncooked fruit and vegetable waste. Residents are issued with a 25 litre green box for the mixed food waste and garden waste. The green box should be left at the boundary of their property on the same day as their black box. Extra garden waste may be left out in an untied black sack.

A bring collection for dry recycling serves 17,075 households on 216 estates.  Materials are collected co-mingled in 1280 litre wheeled bins.  Materials accepted for recycling are:

  • plastic bottles

There are 52 recycling banks in public places.  Materials collected are as follows:

 Waste Minimisation

Home Composting

Enfield Council is working in partnership with the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) and Garden Organic to supply discounted compost bins to residents with gardens. Bins are also supplied to schools to introduce children and their parents to home composting. 

Composters cost £12 for a 220 litre compost converter, £15 for a 330 litre compost converter, and £35 for a 250 litre KOMP. Kitchen caddies can be purchased for £4. Enfield residents may order bins by calling 0845 077 0757 or online at www.recyclenow.com/compost. Ordering on-line entitles residents to a further £1 off.  Over 20,000 composters have been sold to date.

The Council is working in partnership with WRAP and Garden Organic to recruit a network of volunteer Master Composters. The Master Composters provide free and friendly advice to any residents interested in learning more about home composting.

Junk Mail Reduction

Enfield promotes the Mail Preference Service, which residents can sign up to by visiting www.mpsonline.org.uk or calling 0845 703 4599.

Residents can opt out of the Royal Mail's door-to-door service for unaddressed mail by emailing optout@royalmail.com.

Residents can also opt out of the edited version of the Council's electoral register by ticking the 'opt-out' box on the annual electoral registration form.

Waste Exchange

The Council supports Give or Take days throughout the year where residents can bring along unwanted items and take other items brought along. It also works with the Freecycle network and community groups. Please visit www.uk.freecycle.org for more information.

Scrap Store

Art Start is a community project set up, in conjunction with Enfield Council which encourages the reusing of unwanted materials in art projects for children across Enfield Schools.


  
 Other Services

Bulky Waste

The Council provides a free collection of bulky household waste such as fridges, freezers and furniture. Call 0208 379 1000 to arrange a collection. Alternatively, items can be taken to Barrowell Green Recycling Centre.

Enfield Council is also currently working with the ReStore charity to collect unwanted furniture, in good condition, for reuse. Collection is free fo charge, and can be booked for Tuesdays or Thursdays between 9:30am and 3:30pm by calling 0208 379 1000. 

Litter

Residential streets are swept weekly, smaller shopping centres daily, and main shopping centres throughout the day.

The Council has been using specialised crews to collect street leaves every autumn since 2001. They also work in partnership with Enfield Landscape Maintenance Service to co-ordinate collection of leaves from parks and open land. All leaves collected are made into compost.

The Council's flytip clearance crew work 24 hours a day Monday to Friday. To report a flytip call 0208 379 1000.

Schools Recycling

All Enfield primary schools and most secondary schools have recycling facilities. The Council has a dedicated Education Officer who runs assemblies and workshops about waste and recycling to all age groups.

Enfield Council works with local community projects such as Scrapstore, ArtStart and EcoActive to deliver waste education workshops.

Residual Waste

Residual household waste is collected weekly from the kerbside using refuse sacks. Rubbish must be put out for collection by 7am on the collection day. Residents can check their collection day by calling 0208 379 1000 or visiting www.enfield.gov.uk.

Commercial Recycling

The Council offers a weekly recycling collection of paper and cardboard from selected businesses in the borough. For details please call 0208 379 1000.
