 What are the National Indicators?

The National Indicators have been set up to measure and report local authorities’ performance to central government.  A set of 198 indicators, reflecting national priorities, have been set and will be reported from April 2008. Local authorities do not have to report on all 198 indicators; indicators have been selected at a local level and targets have been agreed with central government. There are three waste related indicators:

  • NI 191 - Residual household waste per household
  • NI 192 - Percentage of household waste sent for reuse, recycling or composting
  • NI 193 - Percentage of Municipal Solid Waste sent to landfill

The London boroughs that have agreed targets for NI 191 and 192 are shown in the tables below. None of the London boroughs have chosen to report on NI 193.

The NI’s have replaced the Best Value Performance Indicators (BVPI) and the statutory recycling targets. Click here to see how London boroughs have performed in the past.
