What is the highest performer doing?

The London borough of Bexley has had the high recycling and composting rate for many years. The borough has heavily invested in its recycling and composting services and has selected services that suit its particular set of circumstances.

Bexley provides its residents living in kerbside properties with a three box collection service.  A green box is provided for books, cardboard, paper and yellow pages, a maroon box for aerosols, aluminium foil, mixed cans and plastic bottles and a black box for glass bottles and jars.  Although this system may not be suitable for the high density housing that exists in large parts of London it works well in Bexley partly because the housing stock is 78% house or bungalow.  The service collects on average 211 kilograms per household per year this performance places Bexley’s eighth in the dry recycling league table.

Bexley collects garden waste and food waste mixed together on a weekly basis from all its kerbside properties for composting.  It provides liners for the kitchen caddy at a cost of 5p per liner.  Being an outer London Borough is likely to mean that there is more garden waste available for collection compared to the inner London Boroughs and Bexley has managed to capture a significant amount of this waste stream.  This service collects an average of 187 kg/hh/year this performance place Bexley in second position in the organics league table.

The combined performance of these schemes has resulted in Bexley topping the recycling and composting league table in London over previous years.
