The City of London is expanding its food waste collection service on estates. During November 2007 London Remade provided assistance with an awareness raising door knocking exercise to launch the service on the Golden Lane Estate.

Architects’ briefing review

Southwark’s regeneration programme is encouraging new developments throughout the borough. With 40 percent of the borough now undergoing regeneration and developments valued at around £40 billion, the importance of providing architects with a waste and recycling briefing is ever more important. This ensures that residents and businesses have suitable storage for waste and recycling and access to services and facilities.

London Remade reviewed five architects’ briefings and produced a report highlighting good practice, standard briefing recommendations and relevant issues to Southwark.

Supporting the Squirrels

Sutton chose for London Remade to work with a local scrap store to improve its communications and attract new members. The Squirrels Community Scrap Scheme encourages the reuse of donated clean waste materials and promotes environmental education.

London Remade conducted a site visit and interviews with Squirrels staff and produced a critique of the Squirrels promotional materials. A bench marking exercise was also undertaken which involved contacting other scrap stores and reviewing their promotional material.

Participation rate monitoring

London Remade undertook a participation survey of the City of London’s door to door collection service for blocks of flats to identify how many households were using the service.  Set out and participation rate monitoring for a selection of estates was carried out. Database analysis

London Remade reviewed a database which had been set up to monitor Croydon’s dry recycling kerbside collection scheme.  Suggestions for improving the database were made to firstly help ensure that the information it provided was accurate and also to enabled Croydon to:

• target promotions more precisely
• record, monitor and evaluate promotional activities

Internal waste minimisation and waste audit

The London Borough of Hackney runs an internal recycling scheme for the collection of paper, cardboard, cans, glass bottles, plastic bottles at council offices. London Remade undertook a waste audit analysis in the Town Hall and provided the authority with suggestions on how to implement waste minimisation initiatives within the council buildings.

Bench marking exercise: flats above shops

London Remadecollated and summarised information on how London Boroughs operate waste and recycling collections from residential properties located above commercial premises. This information was analysed to identify trends and best practise for undertaking collections and presented in a report. The report was used to inform Newham’s collection strategy.

Trade waste recycling survey

Time Square and St. Nicholas Shopping Centres (located in the centre of Sutton) are very active in the collection of trade waste for recycling. Sutton wanted to expand this model to traders located on the High Street, which runs between the two shopping centres. London Remade conducted a door to door survey of High Street traders to gauge interest in the scheme and signpost them to information and advice.

Internal waste minimisation action plan

London Remade undertook a site visit to Tower Hamlets council offices and produced an action plan for internal waste minimisation. This included advice on:

• raising staff awareness on waste minimisation and recycling
• reducing paper
• improving recycling and reducing waste

Bring site monitoring

The aim of this project was to determine if the delivery of reusable bags to residents living on estates in Waltham Forest would encourage them to recycle more materials more often. London Remade analysed data on the “fullness” of the near entry containers and the tonnage collected through 50 sites before and after delivery of reusable bags.
