Dry recycling

Since June 2003, Newham has been running an orange sack recycling scheme, which now serves around 97,750 households. Participating properties receive a weekly collection of:

• light cardboard
• mixed cans
• paper
• plastic bottles.

Residents are requested to place all of these recyclables together (co-mingled) in an orange sack and leave at the boundary of their property on refuse collection day.

Organics

Newham now operates a green garden waste collection to all homes in the borough. Residents wishing to participate should call 020 8430 2000 to book a Saturday collection by 12 noon on Friday. Residents can leave green cuttings and leaves, prunings, trimmings and small branches in a black bag or bundled together, this will be collected in a refuse style vehicle. Any unsuitable material will be left for the residents to dispose of.

Dry recycling

All households are included in the orange sack recycling scheme which is collected in the same way as the refuse.  Residents in flats have recycling collected in orange sacks but these are placed by residents into chutes or euro bins depending on the block design.  The orange sacks are then separated at the waste facility using an optical laser.

Many flats have access to sets of three 1100 litre Eurobins, for the co-mingled collection of:

Bring Banks

Newham has a network of over 150 recycling sites across the borough, where residents can bring: 

• glass bottles and jars
• mixed cans
• paper
• plastic bottles
• shoes (not accepted at all sites)
• textiles (not accepted at all sites)
• drinks cartons (not accepted at all sites)

All residents in the borough have a recycling centre within one kilometre of their home.

Home Composting

Newham Council has been running a subsidised home compost bin scheme since February 2004. Residents can purchase a 220 litre compost bin for £4.00 or a 330 litre compost bin for £5.00. 2,850 have been sold so far. Kitchen composters are £15 each or 2 for £25.  All prices include delivery. Waste Exchange

Newham Freecycle is a website dedicated to allowing Lambeth residents to exchange unwanted items, preventing them from going to landfill.  For more information visit: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Freecycle-Newham/

Real Nappies

Newham promotes the use of real nappies in conjunction with the Real Nappies for London campaign established by the Women’s Environmental Network.  Residents can receive a £30 voucher towards the cost of real nappies.  For more information visit: http://www.realnappiesforlondon.org.uk/index.php

Junk Mail

The Council supports the Mailing Preference Service, a service that householders can register with to reduce the amount of junk mail they receive. For more information or to register with the Mailing Preference Service please call 0845 070 0707 or visit www.mpsonline.org.uk.

The council promotes the use of ‘No Junk Mail’ stickers.

Waste Aware Shopping

Newham promotes the use of cotton shopping bags and distributes these at certain times during the year.

Bulky waste collection

Newham will collect white goods and furniture from residents’ homes, to arrange a collection please call 020 8430 2000.  This service is free for up to 6 items.

Alternatively Newham works in partnership with Newham Community Recycling, known locally as the 'Wombles', to provide a free door-to-door collection service for reusable or recyclable:

• white goods
• electrical items
• furniture
• mobile phones
• clothes
• computers
• toys
• books
• gardening equipment

Items collected are redistributed to those most at need within the local community, for example the Wombles recently refurbished a homeless shelter. To arrange a collection please call Cliff Schafer on 020 7511 6400.

Residual Waste

Residual household waste is collected weekly from the kerbside using a wheelie bin.

Commercial Waste and Recycling

Newham now offer a commercial waste collection service to businesses. Commercial waste is also accepted at the Reuse and Recycling Centre for a charge.
