 Kerbside Recycling

Dry Recycling

Hounslow Council provides a weekly green box kerbside collection service to over 72,000 households. The collection is free, and is made on behalf of the Council by SITA UK. Residents can recycle:

  • empty aerosol cans
  • aluminium foil
  • car and household batteries
  • cardboard
  • glass bottles and jars
  • food and drink cans
  • motor oil (in a sealed container)
  • paper
  • shoes
  • textiles
  • yellow pages

It is useful for the recycling crew if materials are separated into plastic bags and placed tidily into the green box as materials are sorted at the kerbside into a stillage vehicle, which has separate compartments for different materials.

Organics

In partnership with SITA, Hounslow operates a green garden waste collection service to 72,000 eligible households. Residents need to purchase biodegradable sacks at a cost of £2.50 for a pack of five by calling 0208 583 5555. Alternatively, sacks can be purchased from any local library in the borough or from the Civic Centre. The service runs all year round, with no need to book an appointment - simply leave the sacks out by 7am at the front edge of your property on the same day as your green box collection.

 Flat Recycling

Dry Recycling

Estate households are provided with a communal recycling site - either an estate frame or a hybrid recycling system - dependant on the size of the property. Materials collected at the estate frame sites are:

  • empty aerosol cans
  • aluminium foil
  • glass bottles and jars
  • mixed cans
  • paper
  • cardboard (not all sites)

The materials are separated at source and contained in five 240 or 360 litre wheeled bins. Cardboard is collected in 1100 litre capacity bins.  The 526 litre capacity hybrid sites uses 9 drawers that accept additional materials including:

  • household batteries
  • shoes
  • textiles
  • yellow pages

 Waste Minimisation

Home Composting

Home composters have been supplied to residents since 1998; to date 17,500 have been distributed.  Free 220 litre compost bins and kitchen caddies are available with information packs and composting guides. Also available are 330 litre compost converter for £8 and a KOMP 250 litre for £30.

Nappy Waste

An incentive of £50 toward the cost of purchasing Real Nappies or a Nappy Laundering service is also offered to parents.

Waste Exchange

Ten Give and Take Days have been held at different locations in the borough. The idea of the event is that instead of throwing away items that could be reused, residents are able to bring them along for other residents to take.  As there is no charge for goods, it enabled residents on low incomes to come along and pick up goods for free, which they may not have been able to afford otherwise.  Items that are reused are potentially diverted from going to landfill, as they may have been destined to be thrown away by the resident with their general waste.

A freecycle website is in operation providing a service where residents can give and take unwanted items for free.  For more information visit: http://groups.yahoo.com/groups/HounslowCentralNorthandEast-Freecycle/

Junk Mail Reduction

Hounslow is running a ‘no junk mail’ campaign promoting the mailing preference service and distributing stickers for letterboxes. For more information visit: www.mpsonline.org.uk.

Waste Aware Shopping

Waste aware shopping is promoted through the distribution of cloth shopping bags, green shopping pledges and other promotion.
