 Kerbside Recycling

Dry Recycling

Approximately 65,000 households are served by a fortnightly collection of dry recyclables.  Recycling in Harrow is compulsory and residents are provided with a blue wheelie bin for the co mingled (mixed together) collection of materials.  The following materials are collected:

  • aerosols
  • aluminium foil
  • cardboard
  • drinks cartons
  • glass bottles and jars (without lids or tops)
  • mixed cans
  • paper
  • plastic bottles
  • yellow pages

Materials are sorted by collection crews at the kerbside.

Organic

Harrow provides a compulsory Brown Bin scheme to 70,000 households to dispose of kitchen waste (inclusive of meat and bones) and green garden waste.  Collections are made weekly.  All kitchen and garden waste can be placed in the brown bin along with animal bedding and untreated wood.

Dry Recycling

4,000 Residents living on estates are served by bring sites for the collection of:

  • aerosols
  • aluminium foil
  • cardboard
  • drinks cartons
  • glass bottles and jars (without lids or tops)
  • mixed cans
  • paper
  • plastic bottles (including plastic packaging / food trays etc.)
  • textiles (at some sites)

Materials are collected separately in a mix of modular banks, 240, 660 and 1100 litre bins and Eurobins.

The borough provides a network of 18 bring sites to supplement the kerbside service. These provide facilities for separate collection of:

 Waste Minimisation

Home Composting

The borough has an ongoing programme to provide free 330 litre home composters to residents  Over 15,000 composters have been distributed since the scheme started in 1995. Please call 0845 225 2600 to obtain a composter.

Nappy Waste

The Council offers a real nappy subsidy of up to a £80 toward the cost of real nappies.

Junk Mail

Harrow provides residents with ‘no junk mail’ stickers.

 Other Services

Bulky Waste

The Council will collect fridges, freezers and other white goods for a charge of between £30 - £70. Please phone 0845 225 2600 to obtain a quote and arrange collection.

Litter

Commuter recycling bins are now in place outside tube stations for the collection of news papers. 

Residual Waste

Harrow council provides a fortnightly collection of residual household waste.  The collection alternates with the collection of dry recycling.  Residents are provided with a green or grey wheeled bin for general waste.


Commercial Recycling

The Council will collect dry recyclables from shops and offices on a weekly basis at a charge. Cardboard, drinks cartons, glass bottles and jars, mixed cans, paper, plastic bottles and yellow pages are collected separately in wheeled bins. Commercial waste will also be accepted at the Reuse and Recycling Centre. For more information please call 0845 225 2600.
